Day 29 - finale day - Sept 7th -resent

I finished the as already posted event of finishing the ride but wanted to recap the day. Martin Schwatz joined me for the 1st 15 miles through Camp Penelton. We had a great time talking biz ( getting me ready for re-entry). Martin headed back and I exited the base and continued another 10 miles and found a local Oceanside diner - oh how I love breakfast.
The ride today was actually pretty hilly and working my way through La Jolla and the outskirts of SD was slow. I had hoped to make the 1:00 pm ferry to Coronado but my progress was slow and the 3:00 pm ferry was a better choice. My timing to catch the ferry also impacted Jeff Howard's ability to ride with me to the border. So I did Coronado solo. I had planned to go to Border Park but the road turned to dirt and seemed like it was not a good choice. I worked my over to the border crossing at I-5 to end my trip.
Beth Bakke an old friend from Portland met me later on my return to Coronado at the ferry and provided me with a place to stay and made an excellent lasagna dinner!!!
The legs are a good sore an and the ride was so worth the effort. Thanks to all who helped me along the way and those who sent notes of encouragement.

Mexico 5:27 pm

DONE September 7th at 5:27 pm

Day 28

The day started out at sunrise to get an early start on getting
through the ugly industrial area of LA and Long Beach. The area is
home to many an oil refinery and the roads are heavy with traffic,
potholes and glass ( not pretty)! After 25 miles I was back to the
beach at Seal Beach. I had a hardy breakfast and a great walk on the
pier, watching the lifeguards jump off the 40 ft high pier into the
surf below and swim to shore Miles seemed to fly by so I took a side
trip to Balboa Island and walked the canals and the sampled the local
favorite - chocolate covered frozen bananas! -- Yummm.

Stayed a on the beach trail to enjoy the flat ride to San Clemente for
my stay with Suzanne and Martin Scwartz and their wonderful kids.
Katie ( the youngest of the three) hung with us all night through
diner at the pier and wine at the marine - she was a joy to talk and
be with. Will ( 2nd oldest) had a 70's rolling skating party and it
was fun to see him at the rink with the other kids -ALL GIRLS. He
said he did not know how to roller skate but he seemed to be a quick
learner! Ellie (queen bee of the hive) - freshman to be in highschool
was busy getting ready for the big first day of high school.

Jeff playing with fierce Schwartz guard dog- as you can see I need a
haircut!

Day 28

Meet my cousin Caroline, Aunt Esther and Uncle George for lunch at the
Paradise Cove Inn in Malibu. It was a classic place to have lunch in
Malibu, which included the whole beach scene! George and Esther
looked great are doing well at 92 yrs of age! We spent 21/2 hours
catching up and reflecting on the past

Day 27 - stroll in the park!

Pretty easy day with 40 miles logged on the" iron pony" today. Rode
along the beach most of the day, watching volley ball, surfers and
roller bladers!

Day 26 -Recap

Finally done with big climbs!  Wednesday was a 100 mile day! Leaving
San Luis Obisbo ( at 7:00 am) was flat and cool with good roads.  Met
several touring cyclist early in the morning but by noon I was pretty
much alone on the climbs up the mountain passes. Had a great breakfast
burritto in Guadalupe.  This monster burritto fueled me over two 2,000
ft passes of the Santa Ynez Mountains.  Water was definetly needed as
the ride was through the hot  interior (90's but felt like 100).  I
went through six large water bottles and my clothes were caked in salt
from all the sweat!  By 3:00 pm I was back on the coast with a tail
wind and cool breeze, so I logged another 30 miles and ended the day
in Goleta - just north of Santa Barbara.

Day 26

Hurricane Jimena on the Baja and fires in LA. The last few days of
this trip are going to be intersesting! Today's rise moves away from
the coast due to Vandenburg Air Force Base. I expect it will be hot
(90's) and there are few towns between San Luis Obispo and Gaviota
which is just north of Santa Barbara.
