Ride with Matt Babb

July 29th Training Ride.

Rode with Matt Babb, a neighbor on Torch Lake. We did a good 20 mile ride in 1 1/2 hours. The terrain was rolling hills with zero cars. Started the ride at 7:00 am which was no easy feat since we played vinyl (records) with Todd and Karol Collins until midnight. Matt is a strong rider but all twenty something guys have it way too easy compared to us on the downside of 50!

What will I be taking with me?

Some of you have wanted to know what I'll be carrying on this five week trip.

It will all fit in two of these panniers (one under each side of the seat). Estimate weight of gear 45 to 50 pounds.

Only other recumbent on Mackinac island

Lighthouse at Makinaw City

Jeanne and I did a 25 mile loop from Mackinaw City out to Lake
Michigan, Wilderness Park, McGillford lighthouse and Paradise Lake.
Ended the day with a ferry ride to Mackinac Island and a stay at a
B&B. Not quite a training ride but still a fun day. Best time at
the Horn's bar in the evening- great music and dancing!

Hill Riding Today - Friday July 24th

Bill Frey climbing hill out of Bellaire, MI

Good training ride today with Jeanne's brother Bill Frey. Bill is riding a vintage recumbent - circa 1970's. He just came back from Human Powered Vehicle races in Detroit- so he was feeling "Most Macho". We did a quick 25 miles with lots of hills.
It was supposed to be rainy today, but the weatherman blew it again.

The RAT ride

Great training ride thru cherry orchards and along Torch, Elk and Bellaire lakes. Food stops offered cherries for the cyclists! Fun spitting seeds. Finished tho 100km ride in 4.5 hours and then rode 20 mile home - for a total of 84 miles. The ride gave me confidence for the trip to come.
